BICOL RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING HELD

The Bicol River Basin Management Committee (BRBMC) chaired by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V OIC, Regional Executive Director (RED) Atty. Gil A. Aromin together with other National Government Agencies (NGAs) convened in a meeting on July 26, 2019 at the Estevez Hall, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) V, Arimbay, Legazpi City.

Matters discussed in the meeting were the need to update the Integrated Bicol River Basin Management and Development Master Plan, updates on the Comprehensive Water Resources Assessment and the status report of the BRB projects implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), National Irrigation Authority (NIA), Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the DENR.

The updating of the BRB Master Plan will help determine priority projects that were unfunded and, in the preparation, and implementation of feasibility studies in the BRB.

Issues on the implementation of flood control projects in the BRB areas were also discussed. Consequently, the members were tasked to provide the list of completed, ongoing and pipeline projects within the BRB area.

Furthermore, House Bill No. 2430, which creates the Sustainable Bicol River Development Authority, its powers, functions and duties, will be discussed on the committee’s next meeting.*JNL###

GREEN SEA TURTLE RELEASED IN VIRAC, CATANDUANES

A green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), locally known as Pawikan, was released by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Catanduanes together with the Provincial Government of Catanduanes to the shores of Barangay Capilihan, Virac, Catanduanes on August 5, 2019.

The Pawikan which measured approximately 51 centimeters (cm.) long and 47 cm. wide was found in Barangay Antipolo, Bagamanoc by Richard Cabrera, a fisherman in the said barangay, and turned-over to the office for its inspection and release.

Moreover, this is the ninth recorded release of marine turtle this year in the province of Catanduanes.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V continuously calls on the public to report such incidents and turnover any wildlife to proper authorities for proper handling and release them to their natural habitat. Continuous information, education and communication (IEC) campaign is being undertaken by the DENR, which have caused increasing numbers of public turn overs to the office.*JNLoria###

DENR BICOL HAS A NEW GUARD. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol has a new guard in the person of Atty. Gil A. Aromin, CESO IV. By virtue of Special Order 2019-07 dated January 7, 2019, Atty. Aromin will lead DENR Bicol replacing Regional Executive Director Atty. Antonio A. Abawag, CESO IV who will also serve as RED of DENR Region 2.
