In celebration of the 2021 International Day of Forests (IDF), some 150 seedlings of Mahogany species were planted by the personnel of Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) San Jacinto and volunteers from the Rizal Integrated School (RIS) at the highlands of Barangay Rizal, Monreal, Masbate.           

San Jacinto CENR Officer Basil Cesar S. Camba said that the tree planting activity is very significant because it will help support the need for water supply of the communities for domestic and irrigation purposes when properly tended.

For her part, Ms. Vivien Co, the School Principal of the Rizal Integrated School expressed the commitment of the school in tending the planted seedlings as they also plan to have activities for its maintenance and protection with the help of their Supreme Student Council.

This year’s theme, “Valuing Water” aims to raise the awareness of the citizenry on the importance of water and the need to conserve our water resources.

The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Masbate led by OIC, PENR Officer Benito B. Salazar and Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Mobo led by CENR Officer Jean V. Imperial conducted a joint coastal cleanup at Buntod Reef Marine Sanctuary in celebration of the 2021 World Water Day with the theme, “Valuing Water”.

The cleanup was participated in by the Rotary Club of Masbate led by Provincial Board Member of Masbate Jamon Jardin Espares and the members of Samahan ng Mangingisda ng Puro Sinalikway (SAMAPUSI). Participants were able to collect ten (10) bags of plastic wastes.

Meanwhile, some one hundred fifty (150) Mahogany seedlings were planted in celebration of the World Water Day by the CENRO San Jacinto in partnership with the teaching and non-teaching staff of Rizal Integrated School (RIS) at the highlands of Barangay Rizal, Monreal, Masbate.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Masbate is grateful for the participation of the stakeholders in the conservation and protection of the environment and natural resources and is looking forward to more activities that will strengthen public engagement in the protection of the environment.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy A. Cimatu expressed his gratitude and hopes to the Build Back Better Task Force (BBBTF) through Undersecretary for Attached Agencies Rodolfo C. Garcia during the launching of the Bicol River Restoration on March 23, 2021 at Camaligan, Camarines Sur.

In his message, Secretary Cimatu conveyed his gratitude to the members of the BBBTF for their unwavering support and efforts since the Executive Order No. 120 or the Strengthening Rehabilitation and Recovery Efforts in Typhoon-Hit Areas Through the Creation of the Build Back Better Task Force was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on November 2020.

It’s been four months since the Task Force Build Back Better started to pursue rehabilitation and recovery initiatives in the disaster-affected communities in Cagayan Valley, Marikina River Basin, and Bicol River Basin. Our short, medium, and long-term plans for these areas are already in place.” Secretary Cimatu said.

Further, USec. Garcia pointed out the approval of President Duterte of the rehabilitation of the existing flood gates and pumping stations and the construction of seven flood control projects along Bicol River. “With the construction of flood control projects, combined with our sustainable dredging program and river bank restoration in the Bicol River, we hope that we are gearing towards a success with lasting impact and benefit for the future generations.”

Moreover, the DENR is also looking forward to actualize the marching order from President Duterte to enable affected families and communities through the plans and projects of the National Housing Authority relevant to the fulfillment of the Build Back Better.

Furthermore, the DENR through the BBBTF and the Local Government Units (LGUs) commit to unite and help the Bicolanos strengthen their resilience to natural calamities. With the continuous dredging and tree planting activities around the Bicol River and with the partnership with the different national government agencies, the BBB is hoping to bring significant and lasting impact not only to the Bicolanos but to the environment, as well.

A female Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) locally known as “Talisayon” was recently released to the shores of Barangay Poblacion Central in Barcelona, Sorsogon. The release was led by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Sorsogon and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Barcelona, Sorsogon.

Mr. Lheyben G. Figueroa, Officer-In-Charge (OIC), Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO) of Barcelona, Sorsogon informed the PENRO Sorsogon about the turtle to which the Office responded immediately.

According to MENRO Figueroa, the turtle was found to be trapped in a net of a fisherman.

The turtle which measures 43 centimeters in length and 42 centimeters wide and with an approximate weight of four kilograms was found to be in good condition. It was immediately released to its natural habitat.

Under Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order (DAO) No. 2019-09 titled, “Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and their Categories”, the Green Sea Turtle is considered endangered. Likewise, all wildlife in the Philippines are protected under Republic Act No. 9147, otherwise known as the "Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act".

The DENR V continuously calls on the public to report such incidents and turnover any wildlife to proper authorities for proper handling and release to its natural habitat. Continuous information, education and communication (IEC) campaigns are being conducted by the DENR, which have caused increasing numbers of public turn overs to the office. The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Sorsogon headed by OIC, PENR Officer Tito R. Migo together with the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) of Gubat, Sorsogon headed by Mayor Sharon Rose G. Escoto, the Gubat Water District headed by General Manager Engr. Gabriel Tiotangco and the officials and residents of Barangay Cabigaan, Gubat, Sorsogon celebrated the World Water Day (WWD) and the International Day of Forest (IDF) at the said barangay on March 18, 2021.

At least 100 narra and cacao seedlings were planted by the participants.

A Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) activity was also conducted to share the importance of the celebrations.

In addition, the PENRO Sorsogon conducted a CEPA activity through a radio guesting at Philippine Information Agency (PIA) with the Provincial Government of Sorsogon.

OIC, PENRO Migo in his message emphasized the importance of forests in generating and sustaining water resources and stressed the depleting natural resources. “I encourage all the participants to take this activity seriously and be stewards of the remaining resources”, he added.

Both celebrations are observed annually. The IDF is celebrated every March 21 while the WWD is celebrated every March 22. This year, the IDF with the theme, “Forest Restoration: A Path to Recovery and Well-being” highlighted the valuable benefits of forest restoration in terms of human health, food security, environmental and climatic conditions, provision of green jobs, stakeholder engagement and healing. Meanwhile, WWD’s theme, “Valuing Water” emphasized on the alarming global water crisis.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) continuously encourages the public to join environmental celebrations and become active partners and movers in caring for the environment.  With these, the DENR is hopeful that there will be a significant increase in the forest covers and reduce water crisis.
