To celebrate this year’s Earth Day, series of activities were initiated by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Camarines Sur headed by PENRO Officer Grace L. Cariño together with the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Goa, Sipocot, and Iriga led by CENR Officers Daisy M. Terciano, Eduardo C. Ampongan and Nestor Franz A. Fortuno, respectively.

A total of three thousand six hundred (3,600) Bamboo propagules were planted at Barangay Sogod, Calabanga and Gatbo, Ocampo Camarines Sur and some one hundred fifty (150) Dangkalan seedlings were planted along Sooc River, Sooc, Lupi, Camarines Sur. Also, about three hundred seventeen (317) kilograms of plastic waste were collected during the Clean-up Drive at Barangay Sooc, Lupi, Camarines Sur.

An onsite Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) regarding Earth Day and Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act were also conducted by CENRO Sipocot. Meanwhile, PENRO Camarines Sur also attended the webinar on “Earth Day Celebration: Restoring the Earth through Green Recovery” hosted by the Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners.

The series of activities for the Earth Day celebration were participated in by the Local Government Units (LGUs) of Ocampo, Sipocot and Lupi, Camarines Sur. Also present in the event were the Kabalikat Civic Communicators Association members, PNP 4th Battalion Camarines Sur, and the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries of the Department of the Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The International Earth Day is celebrated annually every 22nd of April as proclaimed by the UN General Assembly. This celebration provides an opportunity to raise global public awareness of the challenges to the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports. The Day also recognizes a collective responsibility, as called for in the 1992 Rio Declaration, to promote harmony with nature and the Earth, to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of the present and future generations of humanity.  This year’s theme, “Restore Our Earth; Be Part of the Change” focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking to restore the world’s ecosystems.

The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Camarines Norte led by OIC, PENR Officer Marlon C. Francia together with the Provincial Agrarian Reform Council Committee (PARCCOM) and Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) personnel conducted a tree planting activity on April 15, 2021 at Barangay Dogongan, Daet, Camarines Norte.

A total of one hundred (100) assorted seedlings of Narra and Mahogany were planted. The said activity was part of the monthly meeting spearheaded by the PARCCOM.

The PENRO Camarines Norte is grateful for the support of the stakeholders in such activities that will help the environment and strengthen the partnership among stakeholders.

Further, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol headed by OIC, Regional Executive Director Atty. Antonio A. Abawag is looking forward for the continued partnership and support of the stakeholders in promoting and advocating the protection and conservation of the environment and natural resources.

The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Goa, Camarines Sur headed by CENR Officer Daisy M. Terciano in collaboration with the Philippine National Police Municipal Police Station (PNP MPS) of Lagonoy, Camarines Sur recently apprehended a jeepney loaded with undocumented Red Lauan (Shorea negrosensis) lumber having a total volume of 530 board feet on April 3, 2021 at Brgy. Sta. Maria, Lagonoy, Camarines Sur.

The apprehension was a result of the issued Special Order No. 2021-006 of CENRO Terciano activating the Enforcement and Monitoring Team led by Forester III Ubaldo B. Oliquino, Jr. for the continued law enforcement on April 1-4, 2021, when violators are expected to take advantage of the Holy Week season.

After proper inventory and documentation, the seized forest products and conveyance were placed under the custody of the PNP-MPS Lagonoy headed by PSSG Michael O. Doctor for safekeeping pending proper disposition. Apprehended persons will face legal charges for violation of Section 77 of the Revised Forestry Code, as amended, which prohibits possession of timber or other forest products without license.

CENRO Terciano reminds the public to comply with the prescribed procedures for acquiring tree cutting and transport permit in order to avoid legal sanction.

“The increased incidence of apprehensions is seen as a result of the intensive anti-illegal logging and forest protection campaign of the DENR together with other law enforcement agencies, which prompts the public to provide intelligence information to the authorities,” she added.

The overall seized undocumented forest products are estimated to be worth Php 31,800.00.

In celebration of the 2021 World Water Day, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol headed by OIC, Regional Executive Director Atty. Antonio A. Abawag spearheaded various activities regionwide on March 22, 2021.

In Camarines Sur, CENRO Sipocot conducted a Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Campaign about the significance of water resources at Barangay Caranan, Pasacao, Camarines Sur. Consequently, a cleanup drive along the shorelines of Caranan and Balogo, Pasacao was held in coordination with the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU), the Local Government Unit (LGU) and the beach owners in the area. Likewise, an IEC and film-showing were also conducted by CENRO Goa in celebration of the World Water Day.

PENRO Camarines Norte, on the other hand, conducted series of activities such as Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA), Bamboo planting and river cleanup at the barangays around the Bicol Natural Park.

Moreover, PENRO Masbate together with CENRO Mobo spearheaded a joint coastal cleanup with the Rotary Club of Masbate and the members of Samahan ng Mangingisda ng Puro Sinalikway (SAMAPUSI) at Buntod Reef Marine Sanctuary at Masbate City. A total of 10 bags of plastic wastes were collected in the said cleanup. Further, CENRO San Jacinto with the teaching and non-teaching staff of Rizal Integrated School planted some 150 Mahogany seedlings within the timberland area of Barangay Rizal, Monreal, Masbate.

Furthermore, PENRO Sorsogon together with the LGU Gubat and the Gubat Water District planted 100 assorted Cacao and Narra seedlings at Cabigaan, Gubat, Sorsogon. Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials were also distributed after the activity.

PENRO Catanduanes also planted 100 Narra seedlings at Marilima Elementary School at Virac, Catanduanes. Approximately 40 kilograms of wastes were collected during the coastal cleanup activity in the same barangay. Further, IEC materials were also distributed to the participants.

The 2021 World Water Day with the theme, “Valuing Water” aims to strengthen awareness and action towards water conservation. The DENR Bicol is continually conducting awareness campaigns such as CEPA and other activities to provide knowledge on practical and responsible use of our natural resources. Further, the DENR is seeking the public’s cooperation in conserving and protecting the water resources through responsible waste management in the communities.

The 2021 International Day of Forests (IDF) was simultaneously celebrated in Bicol through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V and its Field Offices on March 21, 2021.

In Albay Province, some 200 Kamagong (Diospyros strigose) seedlings and 100 Kawayan Tinik (Bambusa blumeana) propagules were planted at Mt. Masaraga, Amtic, Ligao City. The planting was participated in by the officials and personnel of DENR V, Provincial and Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO/CENRO) of Albay and Guinobatan, respectively, including the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Ligao.

In Camarines Sur, 500 Narra (Pterocarpus indicus), Pili (Canarium ovatum) and Guyabano (Annona muricata) seedlings were planted by the PENRO Camarines Sur together with the LGU Naga along the waterways of Animas River at San Felipe, Naga City. The event was supported by participants from CENRO Iriga, Maogma Village Homeowners Association (MVHA), Rotary Club of Naga, Philippine National Police (PNP) with representatives from PNP City Mobile Force Company and PNP Traffic Enforcement Unit. Likewise, a tree planting activity was also spearheaded by the PENRO Camarines Norte where 200 pieces of assorted indigenous tree species were planted at Barangay Tuaca, Basud, Camarines Norte.

Meanwhile, 6 sacks of non-biodegradable wastes weighing approximately 40 kilograms were collected during the coastal cleanup activity lead by PENRO Catanduanes at Barangay Marilima, Virac, Catanduanes. 100 Narra seedlings were planted at Marilima Elementary School and was followed by the distribution of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials about coastal and marine habitat protection and conservation, as well as proper disposal of facemask from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB). The Virac Municipal Police Station, Philippine Army, LGU Virac, Society of Filipino Foresters, Inc. Catanduanes Chapter, Barangay Officials and residents of the said barangay took part in the activities.

In Sorsogon, 100 assorted seedlings of Cacao (Theobroma cacao) and Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) were planted by the PENRO Sorsogon together with the LGU Gubat at Cabigaan, Gubat, Sorsogon. IEC materials were also distributed to the participants of the activity.

Further, PENRO Masbate together with the CENRO of Mobo celebrated the IDF through the conduct of Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Campaign and planting of 200 Narra seedlings at Tugbo Watershed Forest Reserve (TWFR) at Tugbo, Masbate City. Likewise, CENRO San Jacinto together with the Alpha Phi Omega (APO) planted some 250 mangrove propagules at Bongsanglay Natural Park (BongNP) at Barangay Royroy, Batuan, Masbate.

The 2021 International Day of Forests with the theme, “Forest Restoration: a path to recovery and well-being” aims to create awareness on the importance of forest as it helps address climate change and biodiversity crisis issues. Through these celebrations and activities, the DENR Bicol headed by OIC, Regional Executive Director Atty. Antonio A. Abawag is seeking the public’s interest and engagement in the activities that will help in the conservation and protection of the environment and natural resources.
