The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Albay headed by OIC, PENR Officer Engr. Jerry R. Arena led the inauguration and blessing of the newly built Albay Biosphere Reserve Research and Development Center at Barangay Cavit, Manito, Albay on January 31, 2023.
With a total floor area of 450 square meters, the two-storey building will support the establishment of a Marine Wildlife Sanctuary and Mangrove Conservation in the province and serve as a monitoring and rescue station for marine animals.
Present during the inauguration were Hon. Rebecca D. Chen, municipal mayor of Manito, Albay, Mr. Raymund Daen, who represented Albay second district representative Hon. Joey S. Salceda and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V Assistant Regional Director (ARD) for Management Services (MS) Grace L. CariƱo, Ph.D.
In 2016, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the province of Albay as a world biosphere reserve, which placed the province in the global list of areas for learning about the sustainable development of natural resources and biodiversity.
Albay is the third biosphere reserve in the country following Puerto Galera and Palawan, which were declared in 1977 and 1990, respectively. (With report from PENRO Albay) ###
