The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V headed by Regional Executive Director (RED) Francisco E. Milla, Jr., CESO III kick-started the 2022 Month of the Ocean (MOO) celebration with a Zumba fitness activity and Trivia Contest on May 2, 2022 at the DENR V Gym, Regional Center Site, Rawis, Legazpi City.

The activity was spearheaded by the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) and participated in by employees of the DENR V, Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) V and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) V.

RED Milla in his message, emphasized the importance of ecosystem and biodiversity and the need for behavior change for the benefit of our marine environment. “We have a big role to play as caretakers and voice of marine animals. We are the ones capable to act and make and implement programs and policies for them,” RED Milla said.

 Moreover, the DENR V has lined up various activities, which are the mangrove validation for Best Mangrove Award on May 11 to 13 and 16, Citizen’s Science on May 20 at Castilla, Sorsogon, Elimination Round of the 2nd MOO Quiz Bee for DENR V Employees on May 26, Mangrove Planting on May 27 at Manito, Albay, Final Round and Championship of the 2nd MOO Quiz Bee Competition on May 30, and the MOO Culmination and awarding  of Best Mangrove Award and MOO Quiz Bee Champion on May 31 at the DENR V Gym, Regional Center Site, Rawis, Legazpi City.

The celebration of the MOO every month of May in the Philippines was mandated through Presidential Proclamation No. 57 issued in 1999.

The DENR Bicol enjoins the public to take part on the activities that will enhance and promote the conservation and protection of the various water bodies.###
