Fifty-three (53) Amboina Box turtles (Cuora amboinensis) and one male (1) Philippine Long-Tailed Macaque (Macaca fascicularis philippensis) were released by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Camarines Norte led by OIC, PENR Officer Marlon C. Francia on March 3, 2021 at the Bicol Natural Park (BNP) and Abasig Matogdon Mananap Natural Biotic Area (AMMNBA), respectively, in celebration of the 2021 World Wildlife Day.

The said wildlife species were turned over by concerned citizens and were placed under temporary care of PENRO Camarines Norte until its release.

Meanwhile, the PENRO also conducted an Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign about Biodiversity and Republic Act (RA) 9147 otherwise known as “Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act” through a radio program at DWCN Radyo Pilipinas. Further, distribution of IEC materials and a short lecture were also conducted to the selected teachers of Tuaca National High School and members of the Lions Club Camarines Norte.

World Wildlife Day is celebrated annually every 3rd day of March. This year’s theme, “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet” highlights the role of forests, forest species, and ecosystems services in sustaining the livelihood of the people globally, particularly the indigenous and local communities with historic ties to forested and forest-adjacent areas.
