A Southern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat (Phloeomys cumingi) was released back to the wild by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Camarines Norte through the Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Unit (PAMBCU) on March 16, 2021 at Bicol Natural Park.

A concerned citizen found the rat inside their house at Barangay Talobatib, Labo, Camarines Norte. The PENRO Team immediately responded to the report and conducted necessary assessment to the species. The Team, together with Camarines Norte PENR Officer Marlon C. Francia immediately released the wildlife after observing that the rat is in good condition.

With this, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol led by OIC, Regional Executive Director Atty. Antonio A. Abawag is continually appealing to the public’s cooperation in turning over wildlife species to the nearest DENR office for proper assessment and care before its release. Further, anyone found to be collecting, hunting or trading wildlife species without pertinent documents will be penalized according to the Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
