The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol through the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Sorsogon recently assessed six (6) wetlands in Irosin, Sorsogon.

The six (6) areas were Omagom Spring at Barangay Gulang-Gulang and five (5) waterfalls located at the Barangays of Gulang-Gulang, Cawayan, Tongdol and Carriedo, respectively. The said areas were identified by the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Irosin, Sorsogon as potential ecotourism sites.

Irosin Mayor Alfredo J. Cielo, Jr. is looking forward to the possibility of Irosin being dubbed as the “Spring /and Waterfalls Capital of Sorsogon”. However, to realize this, the LGU Sorsogon needs the technical assistance and expertise of the DENR.

Further, Mayor Cielo thanked the DENR and is hopeful that the public who wish to visit Irosin’s wetland areas such as the Irosin Lake, falls and springs would really take good care of it so that these natural resources will last for generations.

The findings of the assessment will be utilized in assisting the LGU Irosin in formulating the Ecotourism Management Plans of the areas. These management plans are

Meanwhile, DENR Bicol OIC, Regional Executive Director (RED) Atty. Antonio A. Abawag said that, “Our agency is expediting all means to assess as much as possible, all the wetlands and other important areas and cater the request of the LGUs to undertake the necessary assessments in their areas of jurisdictions.
