The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Sorsogon headed by OIC, PENR Officer Tito R. Migo together with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon led by Mayor Benito L. Doma spearheaded the World Wetlands Day (WWD) celebration with the theme, “Wetlands and Water Inseparable and Vital to Life” in Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon on February 2, 2021.

Prieto Diaz Mayor Doma in his message expressed the importance of maintaining and protecting the Wetlands in Prieto Diaz as well as in other places.  He also expressed his eagerness on how to grow the population of Philippine ducks in Prieto Diaz as the DENR Bicol have confirmed sightings of the wild ducks in his area of jurisdiction and on the maintenance of the seed production area (SPA) as a source of mangrove propagules in Prieto Diaz.

Various stakeholders including the SEAMANCOR Ecodevelopers Inc., Philippine National Police (PNP), Bantay Dagat and residents participated in the celebration by planting mangrove propagules, coastal clean-up and distribution of information, education and communication (IEC) materials at Barangay Sabang, Prieto Diaz.

Moreover, at least 220 kilograms of non-biodegradable thrash were collected during the coastal clean-up.

Meanwhile, OIC, PENRO Migo expressed his gratitude to the participants. “Celebrations such as the World Wetlands Day and many others raise awareness about the vital role of wetlands for us people and our planet. Let us take part in protecting and preserving our natural resources and environment.”

The WWD marks the date of the Adoption of the Convention on Wetland in Ramsar City in Iran on February 2, 1971. The Philippine government adopted its local celebration in 1995 under Presidential Decree No. 74, “Declaring February 2 of every year as National Wetlands Day”.
