With the theme "Sustaining all life on Earth", the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol celebrated the World Wildlife Day 2020 (WWD) with the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) V, Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) V, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENRO) of Albay and Sorsogon, officials of the Energy Development Corporation Bacon-Manito (EDC BACMAN) and the Albay Parks and Wildlife on March 3, 2020 at EDC BACMAN Sorsogon and Albay Parks and Wildlife, Legazpi City.

This year's celebration of the World Wildlife Day kickstarted with the conduct of a tree-planting and release of eight (8) Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) at the EDC BACMAN, Sorsogon. Engr. Marcel D. Rosario of EDC expressed his gratitude to the DENR and said that they are one with the Department's goals in conserving and protecting the environment.

"Today is a very significant day for environmental warriors like us. We are interconnected in all forms of life. Let us continue to protect the wildlife for they perform a very important role in our biodiversity," DENR V OIC, Regional Executive Director Atty. Gil A. Aromin said in his message during the celebration.

Moreover, the celebration of the WWD 2020 proceeded at the Albay Parks and Wildlife where some eight (8) high schools, namely: Daraga National High School, Kilicao National High School, Marcial O. Ranola Memorial School, Polangui General Comprehensive School, San Fernando National High School, Sto. Domingo National High School, Bonga National High School and Malinao National High School participated in the World Wildlife Day Quiz Bee Competition and “Sana All” Treasure Hunting. Sto. Domingo National High School won as the champion in both competitions. DENR V, EMB V, MGB V, and PENRO Albay's mascots also sparked the celebration through a fun dance number.

Meanwhile, Dr. Pancho R. Mella, the OIC, Provincial Veterinarian of Albay congratulated and extended his gratitude to the DENR Bicol for spearheading the conduct of the World Wildlife Day 2020.

Furthermore, the Department’s intensified campaign on public information and education was also held through the conduct of a Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Campaign by the DENR Field Offices during the celebration of the World Wildlife Day. Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Guinobatan, Mobo and San Jacinto in Masbate, Iriga and Sipocot in Camarines Sur conducted CEPA to selected schools. San Jacinto CENR Officer Basil S. Camba also facilitated the release of one (1) Olive Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) at the seawaters of Poblacion, Monreal Masbate. Along with this, a Coleto (Sarcops calvus) was also released by the CENRO San Jacinto.

On December 20, 2013, the Sixty-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly marked March 3 as World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild fauna and flora. The date is the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973, which plays an important role in ensuring that international trade does not threaten the species’ survival. *DJaylo
