Mangrove Feb 2020

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V is now accepting nominations for the first “Best Mangrove Award” in the Bicol Region for 2020.

The search for the “Best Mangrove” aims to showcase Bicol Region’s best managed mangrove conservation site, which will serve as a model for existing and future mangrove areas.

The search is open to Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), Local Government Units (LGUs), People’s Organizations (POs) and communities in the region, which are currently managing at least 10 hectares of mangrove areas for at least three (3) years. The nominations must include documentations of their protection and management efforts.

Nominations should be submitted to the DENR V through the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) before March 20, 2020.

Entries will be evaluated based on the criteria during the 2019 Para El Mar Best Mangrove Award and these include environmental (40%), governance/organizational (25%), resource mobilization and sustainability initiatives (25%) and awareness raising (10%).

The top four (4) finalists will be invited to the final evaluation wherein they will be evaluated based on the criteria: clear objectives of the mangrove area (5%), participation of stakeholders (20%), observed reduction in threats due to joint efforts (5%), documented ecological, socio-economic and/or cultural benefits (25%), key management and technical initiatives (20%) and social and physical investments (15%).

The recognition and awarding will take place during the Culmination Program of the Month of the Ocean on May or during the Saringaya Awards in June 2020.
Consequently, the winner will become the official entry of the Bicol Region to the 2021 Para El Mar Awards, which gives recognition to the best practices in the management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Last year, the Bongsanglay Natural Park (BongNP) in Batuan, Masbate was the first entry of the Bicol Region to the Best Mangrove Award Category of the 7th Para El Mar Awards and Recognition and won second runner-up.

The DENR V encourages the LGUs, POs and communities to join in the search for Best Mangrove Award.
