Dead Turtle Feb 2020

A Female Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) was found dead by the residents of Purok 7, Barangay Arimbay in Legazpi City on February 9, 2020.

The dead sea turtle, which was already in its decomposition stage measured  75 centimeters in length and 71 centimeters in width was reported to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol by the barangay officials of said coastal barangay.

The Office through the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) immediately responded and documented the green sea turtle before it was buried in the shores of the same barangay.

Based on the findings, the turtle might have been entangled in a fishnet causing the lacerations on its neck, which resulted to its drowning.

Since marine turtles are protected under the Philippine law and catching them is punishable by imprisonment the DENR Bicol continuously calls on the public to turn over any wildlife to the authorities who can release them to their natural habitat. Intensive and continuous Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) campaigns are undertaken by the agency to heighten public participation in the protection of our marine animals.
