AWC January 2020

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol, together with some representatives from the offices of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) and Community Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) in the province of Bicol successfully conducted the Annual Asian Waterbird Census last January 14-18, 2020 at Cabusao Critical Habitat, Cabuso, Camarines Sur, and at the Island Wildlife Sanctuary of Chico and Naro both in Cawayan, Masbate.

Moreover, students from San Rafael National High School in the province of Camarines Sur actively participated in the annual event in Cabusao Critical Habitat, Cabusao, Camarines Sur. With an objective of spreading awareness of the importance of waterbirds and their habitat, the AWC encourages volunteers from different walks of life to participate in the annual event.

Over ten thousand (10,000) waterbirds have been sighted during the conduct of the activity in the three (3) selected sites. With over nine thousand (9000) waterbirds in Cabusao Critical Habitant, one thousand five hundred (1500) in Chico Island Wildlife Sanctuary and more than one hundred waterbirds were sighted at Naro Island Wildlife Sanctuary with more or less 30 different waterbird species.

This event takes place once a year, during the second and third weeks of January and is being conducted parallel to the other international census of waterbirds in Africa, Europe and Neotropics under the umbrella of the International Waterbird Census (IWC).*JTJ
