Fortuno (right) together with other stakeholders planted bamboo culms along the riverbanks of Camaligan, Camarines Sur on March 23, 2021. At least 400 bamboo culms were planted during the Bicol River Restoration Launch. The bamboo planting was simultaneously done while personnel of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) dredged sandbars along the narrow section of the Bicol River Basin (BRB) in Camaligan, Camarines Sur. These initiatives are part of the Build Back Better (BBB) Program under the Executive Order (EO) 120 or the “Strengthening Rehabilitation and Recovery Efforts in Typhoon-Hit Areas through the Creation of the Build Back Better Task Force”, which aims to rehabilitate the Bicol River.  The Bicol River Restoration activities are deemed to mitigate flooding in the provinces of Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur and Albay, including Catanduanes during typhoons.

The Cawayan Falls at Barangay Cawayan in Irosin, Sorsogon was one of the six (6) wetlands recently assessed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Sorsogon. The findings of the assessment will be utilized in assisting the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Irosin in formulating Ecotourism Management Plans in the areas. These management plans are important in managing and conserving the environment and natural resources.

To celebrate the 2021 International Day of Forests (IDF), a tree growing activity was conducted by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Camarines Sur headed by the PENRO Officer Grace L. Cariño together with the City Government of Naga headed by Mayor Nelson Legacion at San Felipe, Naga City along the waterways of Animas River on March 21, 2021. This year’s theme, “Forest Restoration: a path to recovery and well-being” aims to create awareness on the importance of forests and impart the message that healthy forests mean healthy people. The IDF celebration encourages replanting and recreating lost forests to return lost habitats to millions of plants and animals, which is in consonance with the “Forest in our Midst Project” of the City Government of Naga, which aims to plant trees along the Naga River easements to prevent soil erosion and address environmental problems and ensure a healthy environment.

Members of the Media raised queries on the quarry activities in the province of Albay particulary at Barangay San Roque, Malilipot, Albay. The status of the implementation of the policies on solid waste in this time of pandemic was likewise discussed. The issue on the illegal dredging in Nagas, Tiwi, Albay was also raised. All questions were entertained by the DENR Bicol officials led by the OIC, Regional Executive Director Atty. Antonio A. Abawag, Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) OIC, Regional Director Engr. Maria Socorro A. Abu, and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Director Engineer Guillermo A. Molina Jr., IV.

A Southern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat (Phloeomys cumingi) ready for release after it was rescued by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Camarines Norte through the Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Unit (PAMBCU). A concerned citizen reported the incident upon finding the rat inside their house at Barangay Talobatib, Labo, Camarines Norte. OIC, PENRO Officer Marlon C. Francia led the release on March 16, 2021 at Bicol Natural Park.
