A Mangrove cleanup was spearheaded by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Masbate and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENROs) of Mobo and San Jacinto, respetively on February 3, 2021 at the Bongsanglay Natural Park (BongNP), Barangay Royroy, Batuan, Masbate in celebration of the 2021 World Wetlands Day. The cleanup aims to raise the awareness of the participants about the significant role of wetlands in biodiversity. Following the cleanup, a Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Campaign was conducted to the members of the Royroy United Fisherfolks Association (RUFA) and Gibraltar Fisherfolks Association (GFA). The People’s Organization (PO) were informed of the existence of different mangrove species that grow on wetlands and how resilient mangrove trees can be. The importance of wetlands and its role in clean water, storm protection, carbon storage, climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation along with the ways to promote its conservation and wise use were also presented. The Presidents of RUFA and GFA extended their gratitude to the DENR for the improvement of the livelihood of the PO members through the projects being conducted by the DENR. The activity ended with a video presentation showing the lush mangrove trees of Bongsanglay Natural Park through the collaboration of DENR and the POs in maintaining a balanced ecological system. This year’s theme for the World Wetlands Day, “Wetlands and Water” highlights the connection and significance between water and life.
