AWC January 2020An estimated total of more than 10,000 waterbirds were sighted during the recently conducted Annual Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) last January 14-18, 2020. With over 9,000 waterbirds in Cabusao Critical Habitat, Cabusao, Camarines Sur, 1,500 at the Chico Island Wildlife Sanctuary and more than 100 waterbirds sighted in Naro Island WIldlife Sanctuary, both in Cawayan, Masbate. More or less 30 species were identified and recorded during the activity. This annual event is conducted to monitor the changes in waterbird numbers and distribution by regular, standardized counts of representative wetlands and to provide the basis for estimated waterbird populations.
