To celebrate the International Day of Forests (IDF) 2021, a tree growing activity was conducted by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Camarines Sur headed by the PENRO Officer Grace L. Cariño together with the City Government of Naga headed by Mayor Nelson Legacion at San Felipe, Naga City along the waterways of Animas River on March 21, 2021.

The event was supported by participants from the Maogma Village Homeowners Association (MVHA), Rotary Club of Naga, and Philippine National Police (PNP) Naga with representatives from PNP City Mobile Force Company and PNP Traffic Enforcement Unit, CENRO Iriga personnel headed by CENRO Nestor Franz Fortuno and the City ENRO Staff headed by Engr. Alexander Caning. Almost 500 Narra, Pili and Guyabano seedlings were planted.

This year’s theme, “Forest Restoration: a path to recovery and well-being” aims to create awareness on the importance of forests and impart the message that healthy forests mean healthy people. The celebration encourages replanting and recreating lost forests to return lost habitats to millions of plants and animals, which is in consonance with the “Forest in our Midst Project” of the City Government of Naga, which aims to plant trees along the Naga River easements to prevent soil erosion and address environmental problems and ensure a healthy environment.

The International Day of Forests (IDF) is celebrated annually every 21st of March as proclaimed by the UN General Assembly. Through the IDF, we promote forests’ sustained survival and ensure the economy, ecosystem, and species that continue to thrive. The day promotes Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) where forest-dependent communities can continue to grow and come out of poverty.
