With the new normal being observed brought about by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol under the leadership of OIC, Regional Executive Director Atty. Antonio A. Abawag spearheaded series of online Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Campaigns dubbed as “Webinar Series on Youth and the Environment” on October 12, 19 and 29, 2020, respectively via the Google Meet platform.

            The webinar series was composed of three (3) episodes. The first episode highlighted the importance of responsible solid waste management in times of pandemic, which was discussed by Engr. Jan Michael V. Borja, Engineer II of Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) V. The role of the youth in the environment was discussed by Rhyn Anthony Esolana, Merkid from Save Philippine Seas during the second episode. Further, the last episode accentuated the role of the youth in biodiversity conservation which was shared by Engr. Joseph Alfonso T. Ascalon, the Executive Director of Science Education Advocacy (SEA) Institute.

            Over three hundred (300) participants joined the webinar series which was also broadcasted live through the official Facebook pages of DENR Bicol and DENR Central Office.

            “The DENR is grateful for the enthusiasm of the youth and other fellow environmental warriors in supporting the Department’s advocacies in protecting and conserving our environment. We also thank the speakers for sharing their passion to the younger generation to strengthen awareness and take action in saving our planet,” RED Abawag said.

            Despite the restrictions due to the pandemic, the DENR Bicol continues to reach out to the public by maximizing the power of the new media to sustain its goal in increasing public awareness in protecting, conserving and managing the environment and natural resources.
