WWD February 2020

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol headed by OIC, Regional Executive Director Atty. Gil A. Aromin in coordination with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office spearheaded the celebration of the World Wetlands Day on February 4, 2020 at Barangay Curry, Pili, Camarines Sur.

World Wetlands Day marks the date of the Adoption of the Convention on Wetland in Ramsar City in Iran on February 2, 1971. The Philippine government adopted its local celebration in 1995 under Presidential Decree No. 74, “Declaring February 2 of every year as National Wetlands Day”.

Camarines Sur PENRO Technical Services Division Chief Edgardo I. Sapin in his message thanked the school administration and the students for their participation in the celebration of the World Wetlands Day. “The DENR needs the support of the community. We need your support and help,” he said. “Let us all work together to preserve our wetlands for a cleaner and better future,” he added.

“Educating the young people about the wetlands is very timely and significant in the preservation of the biodiversity,” said Mr. Rolando Llegado, the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO) of Pili, Camarines Sur. He also expressed his gratitude to the DENR V and the PENRO Camarines Sur in spearheading the WWD in the Altamirano-Clasio High School through the lectures given to the students.

With the theme, “Wetlands and Biodiversity,” the celebration of the World Wetlands Day is aimed at highlighting the important role played by wetlands being the habitat of various wildlife species and more importantly as natural solutions, in adapting to, and mitigating the impact of climate change.
