Frigatebird January 2020

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Sorsogon headed by OIC, PENR Officer Herleo O. Pavericio rescued and retrieved one (1) Lesser Frigatebird (Fregata ariel) at Barangay Dapdap, Bulusan, Sorsogon.

The said wildlife was seen struggling to fly along the coast of Barangay Dapdap by two (2) fishermen, Norman F. Galoso and Erwin V. Estrimadora who reported the incident to the Bulusan Municipal Environment and Natural Resources (MENR) Officer Veronica B. Gallanosa. Immediately thereafter, the recovery of the bird was also reported to PENRO Sorsogon.

The PENRO Sorsogon Rescue Team headed by PENRO Pavericio together with Ecosystems Management Specialist (EMS) I Jason Sta. Cruz, Forest Ranger Jan Philip A. Peralta, and Forest Ranger Nathaniel Serrano conducted the interview, inspection, proper assessment and recovery of the wildlife species. The same was turned over to Irosin Wildlife Rescue Center for temporary shelter, rehabilitation and recovery before its release to the wild.

The female Lesser Frigatebird has a wingspan measuring 1.72 meters with a long forked tail and a massive curved tip bill.

Lesser Frigatebird is a seabird commonly found in tropical and subtropical waters across the Indian and Pacific Oceans as well as off the Atlantic Coast of Brazil. This seabird is lightly built with brownish-black plumage, long narrow wings and a deeply forked tail.

PENR Officer Pavericio calls for the continued support and participation of the community in the protection, conservation and management of the wildlife and natural resources in the province of Sorsogon.
