DENR Bicol, BFP tie up for Forest Fire Prevention
In order to foster strong collaboration and coordination among key players in the prevention and management of forest fires, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Bicol and the Bureau of Fire Protection Regional Office will be signing an agreement.
DENR Bicol Regional Director Gilbert Gonzales said the accord is pursuant to a memorandum of agreement between DENR and Department of Interior and Local Government through the BFP in 2002, signed by then Environment Sec. Heherson Alvarez and then Interior and Local Government Sec. Jose Lina as regards forest fire prevention and management.
Under the MOA, the DENR will provide the BFP with thematic maps and profile of timberlands and protected areas in Bicol which include trails and access roads, location of water source and ranger stations.
Alongside this, the partnership will be organizing a Regional Forest Fire First Respondent Team composed of the DENR’s Leatherbacks, BFP personnel and volunteer groups who will conduct round-the-clock monitoring and initiate response to forest fire incidents in their respective area. The same group will also be undergoing intensive training on forest fire prevention and management.
Consequently, they will draft a field guide/manual for easy use and reference of trained personnel from the BFP, DENR and volunteer groups.
“This will be a new development in our measures for sustainable forest protection and management, which will be supplementing our National Greening Program (NGP) implementation in the Region” Dir. Gonzales said.
Dir. Gonzales and BFP Regional Director Lorenzo D. Rellosa will sign the MOA on July 11, 2014.
