DENR Bicol, Albay tie up for Barangay Forestry Program

In order to have a more comprehensive approach to the implementation of the National Greening Program, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Bicol and Albay Provincial Government signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the implementation of the Barangay Forestry Program in the said province. 

DENR Bicol Regional Director Gilbert Gonzales said the MOA signed by him and Albay Gov. Joey Salceda would further buttress the provincial government’s program in climate change adaptation by planting more trees. 

“Under the project, DENR Bicol has allocated 84 million pesos where each recipient barangay would receive 180,000 to produce and plant 10,000 seedlings,” Gonzales said.

Director Gonzales said that this empowerment of the rural barangays to produce and plant more trees will complement in national reforestation goal which is to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares of timberlands until year 2016.

The Regional Office will provide technical assistance in the setting up of nursery in the barangay, which will produce indigenous tree species as well as ornamental trees for landscaping of town plazas among others.
