DENR Bicol slates activities for Environment Month

Focused on the theme of Small Islands and Climate Change and with a slogan of “Raise your Voice Not the Sea Level,” the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Bicol has lined up activities for the month long celebration of the National Environment Month this June. 

DENR Bicol Regional Director Gilbert Gonzales said the activities are aimed at raising the awareness of every Bicolano in the midst of the threat that is climate change as well as encouraging them to act to mitigate and adapt with it. 

“We are beset by so many challenges as a small island developing state, one of which is climate change, and others like eco-waste management, unsustainable consumption, degradation of natural resources, extreme natural disasters and continuing industrialization,” Gonzales said. 

The month-long activities will kick-start with a twin event of a 22-km Bike Ride in Legazpi City and launching of small island's biodiversity in Calaguas Island, Camarines Norte. Launching of climate change advocacy in June 10 as well as DENR Family Day on the same date. 

Mural painting II wherein student painters will summon all their prowess to paint the best scenes regarding the theme “Raise Your Voice Not the Sea Level” will be staged on June 14. 

The Environmental Management Bureau Air Quality Management Team and the Land Transportation Office Flying Squad will conduct the Anti-Smoke Belching Campaign in Legazpi City’s major thoroughfares to check on emission of mobile sources of air pollution on the third week of the month. 

A simultaneous river clean-up of identified adopted rivers under the Adopt-an-Estero program will be also spearheaded by EMB and stakeholders on the 21st. 

The onset of the tree planting season will commence with the celebration of Arbor Day on June 25 as thousands of volunteers are expected to join in the said activity. 

Further still, the 24th Eagle Quiz Contest will be testing brilliant minds from the elementary and secondary schools during the eliminations round in the 19th and 30th. 

A new project “Greening the Blue” awarding will be initiated also by the EMB to give recognition to the participants of GTB Program as well as to strengthen the participation of academes in environmental conservation endeavors. 

On the 30th, the Environment Month will be capped with the culmination activity of Saringaya Awards, which confers environmental management and protection recognition to industries, local governments, government agencies, non-government organizations, academes and individuals.
