DENR Bicol accepts entries for Saringaya Awards until May 30
Nominations for this year’s Saringaya Awards is, up until May 30, 2014, to provide ample time for the judges to evaluate and validate the merits of would-be-nominees for the conferment on June 27.
A Saringaya Award, which is in the form of a plaque and certificate, is conferred at the culmination program of the Environment Month celebration in June to distinctive individuals, groups, organizations and corporate entities who have met the highest standards of performance in environmental protection, conservation and management in the region. A general average of ninety percent (90%) for the criteria set shall be required in order to qualify as an awardee.
To be adjudged winner in any category, the nominee shall be able to demonstrate excellence in the following criteria: for small-scale and large industries – implementation of sound environmental management system, compliance to environmental regulations, socio-economic programs, institutional support, payment of monetary obligation to the government; peoples organization and non-government organization – natural resources management projects/activities, organizational capability and unity, livelihood enterprise development-socio economic, institutional arrangement of DENR, LGU or other government agencies, special awards, local government – institutional support, socio-economic, environment and natural resources project/activites, ecological waste management and compliance to environmental quality, climate change adaptation; for the academe – environmental education, environmental protection and conservation program, ecological waste management, CCA; and for other government agencies – ecological waste management, institutional support, ENR projects and CCA, among others.
Judges will select winner in each category if the 90% mark is met, but should there be no meritorious entries, none will be awarded for the category or sub-categories.
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol Regional Director Gilbert Gonzales said the agency is still accepting nominations for this year’s Saringaya Awards through its various operating units such as the line bureaus, sectoral services, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENROs) and Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENROs) is still accepting nominations for exemplary environmentally sound industries, NGOs, POs, institutions, and others.
In 13 years, Saringaya Award has recognized industries, non-government organizations, peoples organization, local government units, groups or associations, other government agencies, the academe and other entities in the Bicol region who, as a group, corporate body or individuals have supported DENR Bicol for their outstanding achievements in six categories and five sub-categories.
Saringaya, a Bicol term for abundance of growth, lush, and a healthy environment teeming with green trees and mountains, ideal for biodiversity and a well balance ecosystem, was used to symbolize the end-goal of every effort poured into the upkeep of the environment.
