DENR Bicol clarifies grass fire outside Mayon Volcano Natural Park
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Bicol clarified that the grass fire which razed a part of some forested area in Barangay Bonga and Matanag, Legazpi City was outside the protected area of the Mayon Volcano Natural Park.
Forester Imelda Baltazar, Officer-in-Charge of Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Albay said initial reports coming from a technical team dispatched from the field office found that the grass fire was along the alienable and disposable lands adjacent to the MVNP or the lots are owned by private individuals.
She said fortunately no plantation of the National Greening Program was gutted by the conflagration that struck the A&D portion of the timberland.
She explained that such occurrence is technically considered as a grass fire for the reason that the area is not deeply forested apart from the fact that the area is covered by thick bushes.
“Our team is now finalizing the GPS readings and assessing the damage caused by the grass fire to come up with remedial measures to arrest the possible adverse impact of the same to the environs of the protected area,” DENR Bicol Regional Director Gilbert Gonzales said.
Last year, a fire also charred around 50 hectares of forest plantation in Brgy. Lidong due to the summer heat, which spurred a grass fire that ultimately led to a full-on grass fire.
