DENR Bicol, Albay back Earth Hour 2013

A unison of support will resound as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Bicol, Provincial Government of Albay, other institutions, and socio-civic groups join hands in observing Earth Hour 2013 on March 23.

This development came out as the provincial government, through the I Love Albay Movement took the lead to host a big program prior to the Earth Hour shut-off on Saturday, 8:30 p.m. to drumbeat the annual eco-event.

DENR Regional Executive Director Gilbert Gonzales directed all personnel and field officers to abide by the event to shut off for 60 minutes on March 23, 2013 at 8:30 p.m.

“The regional office is supporting this endeavor since it aims to lower carbon emission by shutting off all electrical devices for an hour alongside the I Love Albay Movement which also promotes environmental stewardship through greening effort and awareness,” Director Gonzales said.

The DENR is also urging its clientele, corporate facilities, and stakeholders adhere to Earth Hour. “We are touching base with various groups so we can generate widespread compliance in the region alone,” he said.

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Philippines) traced Earth Hour in 2007 as a single-city event and as of late, it has become the largest recurring environmental mass-action, with 152 of the world’s 196 countries joining the global switch-off. The Philippines has since 2009 topped town and city participation to earn the title of Earth Hour Hero Country.
