DENR PENRO CAM SUR, UBRDEC BICOL, STAKEHOLDERS INK MOA ON ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH COOPERATION

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on Academic and Research Cooperation was forged among the University of Nueva Caceres (UNC) headed by Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of Camarines Sur headed by OIC, PENR Officer Grace L. Cariño, the Urban and Biodiversity Research Development and Extension Center (UBRDEC) in Bicol headed by For. Gregorio V. Santos, Jr. and the City Government of Naga represented by Mayor Nelson S. Legacion during the Founding Anniversary of UNC in Naga City.

The MOA will help develop academic and educational cooperation on the basis of equality and hopes to strengthen ties among the parties involved. It also aims to facilitate capacity building among academic staffs and students, the study on Philippine native and endemic flora, resources and ecosystems, among others.

The MOA also states the establishment of Caceres Arboretum and the projected planting sites such as along the vicinity of the Bicol River tributaries, Cararayan - San Isidro Landscape and along considerable portions of Almeda Highway.

Moreover, the planting of Tindalo, an endangered tree species, was also conducted during the event. The Tindalo is one of the Philippines’ finest wood and for the academicians it signifies the quality education given by the UNC.

The DENR V supports the initiatives of stakeholders in the conservation and protection of the environment and in the promotion of educational and environmental initiatives.*JNL###

GREEN SEA TURTLE RELEASED IN VIRAC, CATANDUANES

A green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), locally known as Pawikan, was released by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Catanduanes together with the Provincial Government of Catanduanes to the shores of Barangay Capilihan, Virac, Catanduanes on August 5, 2019.

The Pawikan which measured approximately 51 centimeters (cm.) long and 47 cm. wide was found in Barangay Antipolo, Bagamanoc by Richard Cabrera, a fisherman in the said barangay, and turned-over to the office for its inspection and release.

Moreover, this is the ninth recorded release of marine turtle this year in the province of Catanduanes.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V continuously calls on the public to report such incidents and turnover any wildlife to proper authorities for proper handling and release them to their natural habitat. Continuous information, education and communication (IEC) campaign is being undertaken by the DENR, which have caused increasing numbers of public turn overs to the office.*JNLoria###

DENR BICOL HAS A NEW GUARD. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol has a new guard in the person of Atty. Gil A. Aromin, CESO IV. By virtue of Special Order 2019-07 dated January 7, 2019, Atty. Aromin will lead DENR Bicol replacing Regional Executive Director Atty. Antonio A. Abawag, CESO IV who will also serve as RED of DENR Region 2.
