US PEACE CORPS SPEARHEADS CORAL REEF RESTORATION AT GAMBAN REEF

The United States (US) Peace Corps leads the coral reef restoration at the Gamban Reef Marine Sanctuary in Presentacion, Camarines Sur from July 30 to August 1, 2019.

Scuba divers from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Goa headed by Daisy M. Terciano with the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) of Presentacion, Camarines Sur and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) V joined the US Peace Corps in the coral planting activity.

Previously, the DENR V in partnership with other volunteer organizations have conducted similar activities in various parts of the region in its efforts to enhance marine biodiversity.

Moreover, with the Gamban Reef Marine Sanctuary as a thriving ecotourism destination, the DENR enjoins the public to be responsible tourists and to keep in mind the leave no trace principle in order to conserve and protect marine biodiversity.*JNL###

GREEN SEA TURTLE RELEASED IN VIRAC, CATANDUANES

A green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), locally known as Pawikan, was released by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Catanduanes together with the Provincial Government of Catanduanes to the shores of Barangay Capilihan, Virac, Catanduanes on August 5, 2019.

The Pawikan which measured approximately 51 centimeters (cm.) long and 47 cm. wide was found in Barangay Antipolo, Bagamanoc by Richard Cabrera, a fisherman in the said barangay, and turned-over to the office for its inspection and release.

Moreover, this is the ninth recorded release of marine turtle this year in the province of Catanduanes.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V continuously calls on the public to report such incidents and turnover any wildlife to proper authorities for proper handling and release them to their natural habitat. Continuous information, education and communication (IEC) campaign is being undertaken by the DENR, which have caused increasing numbers of public turn overs to the office.*JNLoria###
