DENR BICOL HOLDS MURAL PAINTING CONTEST IN CELEBRATION OF CORAL TRIANGLE DAY

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol headed by OIC-Regional Executive Director Atty. Gil A. Aromin heaps on raising public awareness about the Coral Triangle through a mural painting contest held on June 14, 2019 at DENR Compound, Rawis, Legazpi City.

With the theme, “Save Coral Triangle: Stop Plastic Pollution and Waste”, the contest aims to inform the public about the importance of preserving, protecting and managing the Coral Triangle biodiversity through good governance and conservation efforts and approaches designed with community participation to mitigate coastal environmental damage.

Regional Executive Director Aromin said that the campaign aims to showcase in the city the beauty of the Coral Triangle which will usher the awareness of the people to fight for a sustainable management of our natural resources through proper waste disposal and water pollution control.

The mural painting contest was participated by artists from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Bicol University, Camarines Norte State Colleges, Aroroy National High School, Masbate School of Fisheries, CICCADA, Briccio Aninang Sr. Memorial High School, Osmeña Colleges, Forbes Colleges, Tudlo Organization, and some DENR Field Offices.

The Coral Triangle is a roughly triangular area of the tropical marine waters of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste that contain at least 500 species of reef-building corals in each ecoregion. *JMM###

GREEN SEA TURTLE RELEASED IN VIRAC, CATANDUANES

A green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), locally known as Pawikan, was released by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Catanduanes together with the Provincial Government of Catanduanes to the shores of Barangay Capilihan, Virac, Catanduanes on August 5, 2019.

The Pawikan which measured approximately 51 centimeters (cm.) long and 47 cm. wide was found in Barangay Antipolo, Bagamanoc by Richard Cabrera, a fisherman in the said barangay, and turned-over to the office for its inspection and release.

Moreover, this is the ninth recorded release of marine turtle this year in the province of Catanduanes.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V continuously calls on the public to report such incidents and turnover any wildlife to proper authorities for proper handling and release them to their natural habitat. Continuous information, education and communication (IEC) campaign is being undertaken by the DENR, which have caused increasing numbers of public turn overs to the office.*JNLoria###

DENR BICOL HAS A NEW GUARD. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol has a new guard in the person of Atty. Gil A. Aromin, CESO IV. By virtue of Special Order 2019-07 dated January 7, 2019, Atty. Aromin will lead DENR Bicol replacing Regional Executive Director Atty. Antonio A. Abawag, CESO IV who will also serve as RED of DENR Region 2.
