DENR BICOL CELEBRATES WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY

An information and education campaign (IEC) on migratory birds and Bird Watching were conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V through the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) in celebration of the 2018 World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) with the theme, “Unifying Our Voices for Bird Conservation,” at the Chico and Naro Island Wildlife Sanctuaries in the province of Masbate on October 17 to 18, 2018.

The activity which aims to raise awareness on the conservation of migratory birds and other fauna species was participated in by the residents near the said protected areas (PAs) and employees from the DENR V Regional Office, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Masbate and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Mobo.

The observance of WMBD is held every October, which is within the annual migration period of various migratory birds in the Philippines.

Moreover, in a public advisory released by the DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB), the public is cautioned on wildlife hunting, which is punishable under Republic Act 9147, otherwise known as the “Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act” and advised to avoid handling of any wild dead birds which maybe found in the areas around wetlands as these dead birds are susceptible to avian influenza virus (avian flu). 3RD QUARTER PAMB MEETING FOR CATANDUANES NATURAL PARK HELD

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol through the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) chaired by DENR Bicol Regional Executive Director Atty. Gil A. Aromin conducted the 3rd Quarter PAMB Meeting for the Catanduanes Natural Park on August 20, 2019 at Corporate Inn Function Hall, San Roque, Virac, Catanduanes.

The meeting commenced with the presentation of the Protected Area (PA) Management Zone of Catanduanes Natural Park by the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) representative, Mr. Keith Harvey Dimaranan. Dimaranan encouraged the Sunwest Water & Electric Co. (SUWECO) to confer and cooperate with the Department in relation to their proposed hydropower plant construction at Barangay Paraiso, San Miguel, Catanduanes. Mr. Fredie Bueno, the Vice President for Civil Works of SUWECO also presented the typical schemes of the hydropower plant that will be constructed. SUWECO also asked guidance from the DENR for the processing of documents and standards, which they need to adhere to in the construction of the said project.

Meanwhile, RED Aromin thanked SUWECO for the partnership and assured the creation of a monitoring team for SUWECO's compliance of the Environment Compliance Certificate (ECC), among others.

Further, the administration and management of PA, which is under the responsibilities of the PAMB was presented by Protected Area Superintendent (PASu) Yolanda G. Saong.

The 3rd Quarter PAMB Meeting was also attended by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENR) Officer Marlon C. Francia, Technical Services Division Chief of PENRO Catanduanes, Ferdinand Baltazar, Management Services Division Chief, Ma. Juliet S. Araojo, OIC Municipal Environment and Natural Resources (MENRO) of LGU San Miguel Juan T. Torrenueva, other DENR V and PENRO staff, including other officials from the city and provincial LGUs.

DENR BICOL HAS A NEW GUARD. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol has a new guard in the person of Atty. Gil A. Aromin, CESO IV. By virtue of Special Order 2019-07 dated January 7, 2019, Atty. Aromin will lead DENR Bicol replacing Regional Executive Director Atty. Antonio A. Abawag, CESO IV who will also serve as RED of DENR Region 2.
