B+WISER, DENR BICOL CONDUCT LAWIN SYSTEM UPGRADE

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V through the Enforcement Division and United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Biodiversity and Watersheds Improved for Stronger Economy and Ecosystem Resilience (B+WISER) conducted a Learning Event on Lawin Forest and Biodiversity Forest Protection System (LAWIN) SMART 6.0 Upgrade in Legazpi City on October 3 to 4, 2018.

The training was participated in by LAWIN patrollers from the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENROs) and Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENROs) region wide.

The conduct of the workshop aimed to update the technical staff on the available new technology on Spatial Monitoring And Reporting Tool (SMART) used in LAWIN patrolling. SMART, which is open source software for data processing with Geographical Information System (GIS) interface, uses a cyber-tracker technology in monitoring threats, forest condition and biodiversity.

Topics discussed include the introduction of SMART 6, threat or response tracking tool, exercise for the use of the response tracking tool, upgrading of databases and GIS mapping.

LAWIN, which is a forest and biodiversity protection system designed to monitor and report biodiversity and threats as well as address or respond to the threats at hand, proved to be pivotal in ecological conservation.

DENR V have recently conducted and scheduled upcoming workshops in relation to LAWIN to further improve the capabilities of the field patrollers. (Article by: Jade N. Loria)
