DENR BICOL PARTICIPATES IN THE 4TH ASIA-PACIFIC CORAL REEF SYMPOSIUM

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V through the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) technical staff along with hundreds of stakeholders from the different sectors of society participated in the 4th Asia-Pacific Coral Reef Symposium (APCRS) held on June 4 to 8, 2018 at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel in Cebu City.

The 4th APCRS is an international conference dedicated to coral reef conservation. This was facilitated by the DENR in partnership with the University of the Philippines-Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI). First organized by the Asia Pacific Coral Reef Society in 2006, the event became an avenue for scientists, leaders and environmentalists to share their knowledge and expertise on marine and coral reef management and protection.

The theme, “Coral Reefs of the Asia-Pacific: Working Together Amidst Contemporary Challenges,” focused on the latest research studies, technology and innovations in marine biodiversity, coral reef ecology, geology and restoration, ocean processes and citizen science. Speakers included conservation champions from Australia, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia and the United States.

With 2018 dubbed as the International Year of the Reef, the conduct of APCRS proved to be timely.

Former DENR V Regional Director and now Biodiversity Management Bureau Director Crisanta Marlene P. Rodriguez said during the pre-conference of APCRS that through “effectively reducing the drivers and pressures on coastal and marine ecosystems, which led to its continuous degradation, the coastal and marine ecosystems’ condition will improve thereby enhancing ecosystem functions and services.”
