STATEMENT OF DENR SECRETARY ROY A. CIMATU

ON PRESIDENT DUTERTE’S SONA

 

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) welcomes and fully supports President Rodrigo Duterte's resolve to prioritize environmental protection and his non-negotiable policy against irresponsible mining.

The President made a very strong point in his second State of the Nation Address with his pronouncement that the protection of the environment must be made a priority over the benefits derived from mining.  I know for a fact that in a number of cases, weak and irresponsible mining practices result to environmental destruction – contaminating farmlands and poisoning our rivers and seas.   Miners better refrain from despoiling our watersheds, forests and aquatic resources.

The DENR is one with the President in his firm desire to rid the country of abusive and irresponsible miners that are concerned only with profits and care nothing for the environment and our countrymen.

To ensure responsible mining, the DENR will strictly enforce mining and environmental regulations. Mining operations found violating laws, rules and regulations will have to pay the price for damages caused, through payment of fines, suspensions or closure, and subject the President and each of the Directors thereof responsible for the acts committed by association, corporation or partnership to suffer the penalty of imprisonment at the discretion of the court.

Mining in the Philippines can only be responsible if the development of the country's mineral resources will be on the basis of technical feasibility, environmental sustainability, cultural and social acceptability, and financial viability. The absence of one will not render a mining project as responsible. ###

    DENR SUPPORTS 2ND BICOL MINING SUMMIT

        The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V joined the Philippine Society of Mining Engineers (PSEM) – Bicol Chapter and several stakeholders during the 2nd Bicol Mining Summit on July 19-21, 2017 in Legazpi City.

          To kick-start the event, a Zumba and Color Fun Run with the theme, “Color Fun Run: Mine for Life” started at the Bicol University Commencement Grounds at 6 o’clock in the morning of July 19, 2017. Mario Nolledo, a DENR V Employee bagged the first place during the said activity.

          The summit was highlighted by a Mine Exhibit at the Legazpi City Convention Center. Following the opening ceremonies, a bowling tournament at the Embarcadero de Legazpi, Mine Symposium, Mayor’s Night, Students’ Congress and City Tour, among others are some of the activities lined-up during this three-day event.

        DENR V Regional Director Crisanta Marlene P. Rodriguez, in her message, during the ribbon cutting ceremonies of the Mine Exhibit stressed the essence of sustainable and responsible mining.

         With this year’s Mining Summit theme, “An Approach towards Sustainable, Responsible and Environment-Friendly Mineral Development in Bicol”, DENR hopes for the enlightenment of the public on various mining issues and concerns, which are far from over.###
